What if you were taken from your home and put in a place where people make you feel as if you don't belong?

Well, that is exactly what happens to fifteen-year-old Amari, an Ashanti girl from Africa. She is taken from her home and forced to endure the Middle Passage on a journey to the United States. Shackled and afraid, Amari suffers horrible conditions as she travels on the boat to America.

Amari's suffering doesn't end when she reaches America, where she is sold to the cold-hearted Mr. Derby; it seems only to begin. Not only does this girl have to put up with slave life, but she also has to put up with Clay, Mr. Derby's son. Amari also delivers a baby and witnesses death during her time at the Darby home.

Will Amari find her own happiness in a far away place, while living the life of a slave?

This book was really enjoyable because of all the emotions and adventure put into the story. You won't be able to put this book down, because life in a slave's eyes is just too interesting!

What would you think if your cat left for a day and came back with cuts and ragged fur?

One night a young cat receives a prophecy from their ancestors. She tells her leader, Bluestar, a gray-blue cat, that something can save her clan.

A young tom cat, Rusty, leaves his house to venture into the woods to explore. But, when he chases a mouse, he gets attacked by another cat. He fights off the cat named Graypaw. After the fight, he receives the ofter of his life! Will Rusty accept the offer and change his life, or will he reject it and continue on with his normal life?

I loved this book because it has many surprises. It is a book of different genres (suspense, action, adventure) that make it great. I think Erin Hunter makes you really think from the point of view of a cat. I really would love to read the next book, Warriors: Fire and Ice!

For a book with tricks and twists, read Warriors: Into the Wild by Erin Hunter!

Book Review: "The Color of Love: A Mother's Choice in the Jim Crow South" by Gene Cheek

Based on a true story that happened right here in North Carolina, in The Color of Love, Gene Cheek tells his story through this tear-jerking autobiography. Born in Winston-Salem, your Gene faces the true meaning of love, hatred and kindness in the deep south of the 1960s. Born into poverty, and with only his mother to guide him, Gene weaves his way through life the best he can, dealing with an alcoholic father, Jesse Cheek, and the idea of racism. Soon, Gene learns how to forgive the ones that have hurt him the most, but he can't help but harbor a deep hatred for his father and blames Jesse for everything that has happened to him and his mother. Young Gene has also learned that you should never judge a person by the color of their skin. As Gene grows older, everything seems to be going right for his mom and himself, but then, Gene's mother Sally made a choice that could tear mother and son apart. Eventually, Sally would have to make a terrible decision.

In the 1960s, interracial relationships were looked down upon and most of the time, people would act upon them in violence. In Winston-Salem, interracial relationships were illegal, as well as marriage and living with a person of color if you were white. Cornelius Tucker, or Tuck, and Sally Cheek make a daring decision when the two decide they love each other. After Tuck and Sally are seen together by Jesse, it didn't take long for their relationship to attract unwanted attention, including a house call from the Ku Klux Klan. Family members, neighbors and lawmen turned their backs on the couple, and Sally and Tuck were left to fend off the hatred on their own.

I liked this book because it was nonfiction. The events in this book actually happened right here in North Carolina. This book was hard to put down too, because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Were things going to get better or worse? Was Sally going to be OK? What about Gene? The Color of Love is an excellent book to read because it shows the reality of racism and how it affected so many people and how some people were kind while some remained hateful toward others.

Book Review: "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer*

What would you think if the person sitting beside you at school turned out to be a vampire?

Bella Swan, an average seventeen-year-old, has just moved to Washington State to live with her father after her mother gets remarried. Bella doesn’t mind living with her father, but she is really unhappy about leaving sunny Arizona for the rainiest part of the whole United States.

Bella is happy to see that everyone at her new school is very friendly to her, with the exception of one student: Edward Cullen. Edward glares at Bella constantly and tries to change his schedule after finding out he shares classes with her. Edward then skips school for the rest of the week, and Bella can’t help but think it’s because of her.

A few days later, Bella is almost in a terrible accident, but she’s surprised to see that it’s Edward who saves her. After that incident, Bella wants to know everything about Edward, and she becomes suspicious about him. Soon Bella finds out that her theory was correct and Edward shares his deepest, darkest secret with her – he’s a vampire.

As Bella keeps Edward’s secret, they become good friends. However, as their relationship develops, Bella finds herself in trouble yet again. How’s will Edward’s secret save her?

I really enjoyed this book because it is suspenseful – I had a hard time putting it down! Even though some may think Twilight is just a “vampire book,” it combines many genres (romance, action & adventure, suspense and even some humor) into one. I also think Stephenie Meyer does a great job making the characters sound like real teenagers which makes the book even more enjoyable. I can’t wait to read what happens in the second book of this series, New Moon.

For a great read, try Twilight by Stephenie Meyer!

Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country. Nominations are posted on Support Teen Literature Day during National Library Week, and teens across the country vote on their favorite titles each year.
