What if you were taken from your home and put in a place where people make you feel as if you don't belong?

Well, that is exactly what happens to fifteen-year-old Amari, an Ashanti girl from Africa. She is taken from her home and forced to endure the Middle Passage on a journey to the United States. Shackled and afraid, Amari suffers horrible conditions as she travels on the boat to America.

Amari's suffering doesn't end when she reaches America, where she is sold to the cold-hearted Mr. Derby; it seems only to begin. Not only does this girl have to put up with slave life, but she also has to put up with Clay, Mr. Derby's son. Amari also delivers a baby and witnesses death during her time at the Darby home.

Will Amari find her own happiness in a far away place, while living the life of a slave?

This book was really enjoyable because of all the emotions and adventure put into the story. You won't be able to put this book down, because life in a slave's eyes is just too interesting!
